East Dunbartonshire Profile
East Dunbartonshire: The Road to Becoming a Fairtrade Zone
In October 2007, East Dunbartonshire became one of Scotland's Fairtrade Zones; meaning that the entire local authority area has shown support for Fairtrade. The campaign to achieve Fairtrade Zone Status took little more than 3 years, and was organised by the East Dunbartonshire Fair Trade Group. One of the group's long-standing members, Angela Oakley, talks to Duncan Smart, SFTF Campaign Development Intern, about what the campaign involved.
Kilombero Rice Project - A recipe for success
East Dunbartonshire Council has formed a unique partnership with Just Trading Scotland to bring fairly-traded Kilombero Rice to Scotland. Scottish Councils, church groups and other local community groups have joined East Dunbartonshire Council to buy a total of 11,500kg rice so far, returning significant benefits to the rice producers in Malawi. Supporting the Rice Project has brought social, economic and educational benefits at the local level, and at the same time is contributing towards East Dunbartonshire's status as a Fairtrade zone.
